Well, let’s see…what’s on my mind today? How about a little Abraham? When John the Baptist told the Pharisees and Sadducees to bring forth fruits of repentance to show their worthiness, John further told them that proclaiming themselves as descendants of Abraham would be of no avail, for God could raise up children of Abraham from stones. When the Pharisees challenged Jesus and claimed their redemption by means of being descendants of Abraham, Jesus told them, “If you were Abraham’s children, then you would do the things Abraham did…”
It seems clear that our Christian heritage is of limited redemptive value to us. We can claim to be Abraham’s children, faith descendants of Peter or Paul, a saint, Billy Graham, a pope, or of a denominational hero. However, if God can make descendants of Abraham out of stones, I’m sure He could do the same of anyone we want to put forth!!
Of course, the message is that regardless of any person, denomination, or church by which we may hope to use to justify ourselves, the only thing that will matter is the personal accounting of our own faith life. It won’t matter that we are spiritual descendants of Abraham, descendants of anyone else, or members of a particular church or denomination...for they can all be made from stones.
